Your Thoughts on Street races?

Do you like them, hate them?

Im not a big fan on them really, theres never enough room and that always leads to disasters like today with Craig, James and Mark. Same sort of thing at the Gold Coast last year.

You really have to fight hard to gain a spot or two. But i guess it all adds to the thrill of V8 Supercars.

I really enjoy them, proper street circuits that is. With the racing “bumps”, man hole covers etc, it all adds an extra element to a race. It might be a concrete jungle, but I think it really challenges the drivers as to not make a mistake which could effectively end their race. Unlike some of the tracks on the calendar, like Bahrain, but thats a Tilkenessed track.

However, I wouldn’t want any more on the calendar. 3 is enough rounds imo.

I absolutely love them. Even Indy, which always brings us ford fans grief.

Disasters happen at any track (look at the crash in the Brutes, that was on the racetrack section of the track, not the street section).

most proper race tracks i find a bit boring in their layout, pukkakkohe for instance… and i’m sure i spelt that wrong. I simply can’t stand phillip island for some reason.

a good street circuit is more exciting, and overtaking takes skill, timing, determination and track speed. i’m not saying that other circuits are easy, but it seems that you need more than just good power down and grunt to overtake on a street circuit. Other thing i love about street circuits are the ones with big elevation changes (monaco for instance). dunno why, i guess it’s the same appeal as watching the train of supercars go through the dipper.

I think Street races are really good exciting entertainment for the sport. Most street circuits have a real party atmosphere to them and they just create a massive show out of them, like with indy and adelaide you get concerts and just a fun atmosphere. It also tends to draw massive crowd figures which is always a good thing. I am however starting to get a bit worried now with the number of accidents and dramas they are creating especially today with those accidents and of course indy always ensures of plenty of damaged cars. But i guess like everything you have your good points and your bad points and just have to weigh it all up and make the right decision for the sport and at the moment thats keeping street races

I prefer non-street races. Mainly because I dislike viewing the race and trying to take photos through fences. Plus, unless you’re seated in front of a big screen or listening to the commentary, it’s difficult to tell what’s going on in other sections of the track. Indy is awesome and the party atmosphere is great, but I still love going to QR and being able to see the whole track. Plus, we take our young son along to QR (have since he was born)… but we would never take him to Indy. I also think non-street races are safer…. less concrete walls and more run off areas.

I must admit I am in two minds about them. They had an element of real thrill to the race, the way they cut the corners, the closeness of the concrete walls. But I also like the tracks like Queensland Raceway, and those tracks. Queensland Raceway in particular I love, as you can see the whole track, no matter where you are.

I am in two minds too. They usually provide more action but the carnage is not good . Particularly when a driver is an innocent victim in someone else’s accident and drops massive amounts of points in the championship chase.

They make good television but lousy viewing for spectators on the ground.

But Adelaide has done much to lift the V8 Supercars profile in Australia , which can not be a bad thing.

Its not that i hate them, but its just that indy and adelaide are enough. bring back the tracks with views of the whole circuit, and not street circuits where u hav 2 wait 2 and a half mins 2 c 1 corner. Clipsal and indy i can handle, hamilton is pushing it but i can accept it but i mean townsville, and possibly perth and homebush? no way. Enough is enough!!

Actually not a big fan as there isn’t as many places for passing and if you get a hot head out there you can easily end up in someone else’s accident.
Having said that, they have produced some very good racing, but no track ANYWHERE comes close to Bathurst, man I love that place. Cant wait to see T8 win there again this year to make it 3 out of 3.

Its good to have a mix.
Street races certainly have more excitement plus they are usually closer to capital cities - hence people tend to flock to them knowing that the party will continue right next to the track (and they don’t have to drive home).

That said, variety is also good, variety of circuits and conditions - keeps it interesting.

Street races can be pretty entertaining but they contribute little to the overall good of motor sport. I would much rather see existing or newly built motor racing circuits pick up some revenue from the V8s to enable them to stay around and provide ongoing support to the motor sport community.

Another issue is the substantially higher likelihood that an otherwise small ‘off’ can turn what may have been a drive-away incident into a smash into a concrete barrier that can result in massive risk to the driver, expense to the team and loss of points.

Having said that, I would be happy to leave the Adelaide event in it’s established position.

i do like street races, indy not as much- the passing opportunities are very limited.
and the concrete barriers can hurt big time!

Yes, they are alright, the best is Clipsal, Indy is quiet boring. Though, if I had a choice I would have a normal race track, it is where motorcars belong. It would be boring with just circuts though. I have to say, Hamilton was the worth track I have ever sceen.
