What motorsport courses are there?

wodonga tafe has some. just promise me you wont be stupid and go to UC and do one of their “sports” courses - it took 2 and a half years of fighting to get motorsport accepted by the uni as a legit sport.
The wodonga Tafe site has some good info.

heres the link to cert III Lindy. If i wernt so over being a broke student id so do it! maybe seen i finish uni in june i may feel better about it by sept!

thanks nicola - shecked it out. looks interesting hey!
anyone else know anything?
Emily Rainbow 8:51 pm March 23rd 2008
Last I heard Wodonga was slowly closing their Motorsport course….
I’m currently doing Cert 3 at Southern Qld Institute of TAFE in Warwick with Doug Partington (ex DJR who started the Wodonga course). It’s pretty darn good and has a good rep. Ex students working at 888. Worthwhile if you can stand the small country town thing.
Lindy Hall 8:55 pm March 23rd 2008
oh, i remember you moving away to do that! how is it going?
i just moved out to a little country town, about 6 months ago. love it. although i do have family out here which helps. i also have a daughter, so i dont know about uprooting her to travel so far away!
pity there is nothing closer, im sure there will be something in the future yeah? as motorsport gets bigger an dbigger.

It’s going pretty well. Ex-Larkham V8 and Gricey’s Brute Ute to play with. Plus the Formula Ford… It’s pretty fun. Although the uniform sucks. Lol.
So where is Bena? I know that Melbourne’s Kangan Batman TAFE also has a semi-decent course…
Lindy Hall 9:21 pm March 23rd 2008
oh great em!!!!! im very happy for you! and yes, does sound like fun!
bena, its out in the south gippsland region on vic. about an hour away from frankston - and hour and a half from melb.
i wonder if in a few years that this batman tafe would have imporved thier course.
the courses sounds like they are very generalised, and cover a broad range of things
no specific topic as such. am i right?
Emily Rainbow 9:36 pm March 23rd 2008
Cert 3 is usually more generalised than cert 4/diploma. Kangan Batman don’t offer a cert 4 atm, but 2nd year your can kinda pick your specifications more. KB isn’t too bad as it is - I was going to be going there myself.
They have several cars they engineer for state series’ in several categories and the better students usually get a placement with a local v8 team. Greg Moulden seems to have a lot of knowledge and contacts. They also offer a 6 month cert 2, so if you’re unsure, i’d recommend maybe starting there as a taste. It’s also a helluva lot cheaper…

I agree with Emily………The course at Warwick is excellent and Ive had students work with us serveral times at SBR, T8 and in Yamaha’s Racing programs. You cant go wrong with Doug.
PMM have a could of the Wrwick guys working there.
Emily Rainbow 9:46 pm March 23rd 2008
I didn’t know any were at PMM, Matt. There’s a guy at SBR’s engine shop, and two at T8, and one at Skelter that I know of from last years course.
Doug’s kinda one of those guys that you tend to seriously listen to anything he says. He’s almost like a walking talking encyclopedia of motorsport. It’s fascinating.
Emily Rainbow 9:48 pm March 23rd 2008
…Although according to Campbell, to get his job I still need to go off and do Mechanical Engineering at Uni as well as the course. Seven years of study + experience to even try to get on his level. It’s kinda intimidating…
Matt Cousins 9:51 pm March 23rd 2008
Paul and Charlie are at PMM.
Emily Rainbow 9:53 pm March 23rd 2008
I’m guessing they’re from years prior to ‘07…?
Matt Cousins 10:06 pm March 23rd 2008
Yep……..both 06 I believe.
So keep up the good work Emily because there are plenty of opportunities out there……Go Girl!
Emily Rainbow 10:07 pm March 23rd 2008
Cheers Matt. =D
Lindy Hall 10:16 pm March 23rd 2008
oh cool!
wow - 7 years + at uni hey! but he does have the TOP job hey!
i guess its something to look into, after allmy life revolves around the v8’s. and, i need a new direction for a career. feeling stuck as a 24/7 mum
Emily Rainbow 10:41 pm March 23rd 2008
and even after that you wouldn’t just go straight into his job. =S
I guess it really depends where your passion lies, Lindy - do you admire the engineering of the cars, do the designs intrigue you, or do you just love the racing and being involved? Cos I guess the thing with the courses is that unless you want to get your hands dirty, it’s prolly not ideal - at Cert 3 level it’s aimed quite squarely towards the mechanics of it. Cert 4 offers marketing/pr units, but i’m not sure if you can just elect to do those ones… It all depends on what direction you’d want to go in: design/engineering/mechanics/fabrication/media/marketing/sales/admin… And that’s just within a team! Cos then you’ve got V8SA, TEGA, and other regulatory bodies if that’s your bent.
But yeh, the course is more than just full-time - it’s more a lifestyle thing. You eat, breathe and live motorsport day-in, day-out. It’s a huge commitment, but one that I think’s worth it. Anyway, have a think, and if you have any questions you want to ask I’ll try to help or I can put you in contact with one of the co-ordinators. Maybe even just talking to Dougie might help…?
Lindy Hall 10:54 pm March 23rd 2008
cool - thanks heaps em! its much appreciated - will chat to you more about it later im sure =)
Nic 1:06 pm March 24th 2008
Wow. thanks for the tip off Emily. Warwick looks way better than Wodonga (and its further away from canberra).
Muz... 3:30 pm March 24th 2008
Can you tell me what the problem with UC is Nicola? Cause I’m in year 12 now and media/journalism there are a possibility for me, possibly even the sports media course. Anything that would be helpful to know?
