V8 Supercars Safety

Just wondering what everyone's thoughts are on safety.

Neil Crompton made a good point at Bathurst during talking abot the Weel/Pither crash about maybe having something like what they have in Formula 1 and NASCAR where a light comes on inside the car to indicate there has been an accident somewhere on the track.

Alot of safety issues need looking at from flag marshal points, to the tyre bundles used at Hamilton and Indy as well as doing something about the concrete walls especially on street circuits. CAMS need to get off the backsides and need to start addressing some of these issues. Preferably a few years ago already.

Sounds good to me Jorden, anything that improves saftey and protects everyone involved in the sport is worth investigating. :o)

What they already have in place are lights at parts of some circuits, on the top at Bathurst and turn 8 Clipsal for example. These give early warning of a Yellow Flag ahead…

I would be thinking that there would be some issues with the light in the car at some circuits (eg Bathurst) where they would need to be sure of a reliable radio link.
If I remember correctly, these in-car lights are operated from Race control, so another issue would be communicating the need for the warning from the flag point to RC so that the light can be activated. The communication does happen, but it takes a finite time. At F1 they have monitors where they can see EVERY section of the track in RC, and while they have the monitors at the V8 rounds there is not the blanket coverage that the F1’s have…

Great point Andrew,

Also if lights are to be used in the car’s, then they have to be illuminated in such a way that it does not distract the driver, causing more accidents. James Courtney clobbered the wall on his Bathurst debut for HRT when he was distracted by a dash alarm, so it can happen….

I think there needs to be some more ‘driver awareness’ of danger, particularly in the development series..

The lights would need to flash faster in the sector where the accident has happened , otherwise drivers could be forgiven for thinking that the light was just indicating another safety car period.
