Well we have all heard about F1 moving to night races with the first night round being held at Singapore. After watching the V8s this weekend at Sandown, it happened by coincidence that the third race ended up as a twilight race. Now we need to ask what’s best for the sport, do we look further into this new found time slot. Would you go to a twilight race. should the guys from V8SA be looking into these types of events for the future. Maybe would help Eastern Creek find a niche it so much needs.
Jamie was the third race at Sandown hard to steer around seeing it was so dark. It seemed like it was not too much of a difficulty. After all the cars do have lights fitted to them, you just need to turn on a switch for the last race.
Let me know your thoughts

One of the issues is providing suitable lighting: No only for the race (and TV broadcasting can require a LOT of light), but also so that the teams can pack up and the spectators get safely back to their cars.
There aren’t a lot of circuits set up for it… but night racing can be pretty spectacular.

I’ve seen 12 hour and 24 hour races at Mt Panorama and the driving at night is absolutely awesome. Only prob up here were the Roos jumping out on the track - but that can happen during the day anyhow. Except these races are obviously different to the V8’s - especially competitive-wise since a lot of the V8’s are sprints and depend on good conditions - driving in the dark isn’t one of them!
Maybe a street circuit where there is already sufficient lighting like Indy… now that would be cool.

I too went to the Bathurst 24 hr races. Loved the night racing!! Got some awesome photos of the cars with the glowing rotors.
The headlights on the car dont really cut it for racing at high speeds around a track. You need to see a lot further than the headlights light up sufficiently.
So not only do you need more lighting around the track - all the flag points need to have reflective coloured boards instead of flags.
All the officials need to have high-vis vests. (they are usually stingy with the vests.)
The cars need to have a light on the car on the outside, lighting up the number on the side of the car.
And another thing to consider is the neighbours!!!! People who live near track’s done like noise, and complain if its too loud, or the noise goes on too late at night, or too early in the morning. (I know I know - if they dont like it - they should move.)
But all that aside - I rekon it would be awesome to see some night racing!!!

Well wouldn’t that make EC the perfect place for a night race then. It is away from housing out on the M4 motorway, it is easy access, and with this supposed ‘revamp’ of the track lighting could be included in the upgrading package

Queensland Raceway would be a good place to host a nighter as well. QR is compacted into a fairly small space so it wouldnt take much to light it. It might make it less boring…

I think it would be interesting to have maybe one or 2 twilight events at a suitable track. Maybe on a night that won’t clash with any televised football commitments. I hate it when the V8s are on an early telecast because of the football (sorry to any footy fans!)

One of the reasons behind the F1 move is so that the race is telecast during a reasonable hour in Europe/US (ch 7, take note).

That would be an awsome idea. Certainly make for interesting racing

Hella Australia did a big trial of lighting a racing track at Calder Park with their products in December last year - it went really well and had the likes of Mark Webber, Mick Doohan and Leanne Tander in attendence so if V8SCA was going to go that way - I am sure there are plenty of ways they can make it happen and make it a success.

I would like Bathurst to start at around 5 or 4 then go into the night! That would be awsome. Philip Island would also be an inresting night circut.
