It's such an unfortunate situation... especially when you see how hard the Howard government fought for Hicks and Corby (and whether they're guilty or not - condoning terrorism/drugs is a whole different kettle of fish to supporting someone who has been involved in an obvious accident)

I'm not sure of the current stance from the Government in relation to this as I didn't see the report on 60 minutes - but it's a shame that a petition needs to be done in a situation like this to bring it to their attention (meanwhile, the media will plaster the Corby's all over the paper - but not someone in a situation like this)... but if this is what it takes - sign the petition and spread the word around!!

Out of all people - Troy would be just as devastated about those people dying and the injuries that occurred - and guilt is a terrible thing :( . But... typical Americans just wanting to blame others... and poor Troy is the target.

Thanks for posting this Roh. I didn't know anything about it until I saw it on 60 minutes.

I thank my lucky stars that I have never lost anyone to tragedy like these people so I know I have no idea how they feel, but surely they can't put the full responsibility and blame on Troy? I know they need someone on which to focus their anger and as he is the person that physically impacted with the crowd he has attracted this, but I don't understand how they can be so close minded as to not include others and to take some responsibility themselves, like Hermione said, they were aware of the dangers by standing in the open next to a car doing whatever miles per hour.

I really feel for Troy and his family and hope that the courts see the other factions involved in this tragedy

Thanx for the link Roh. Just added name it is really unfair that he is being charged. The promoter should be held accountable. Troy was there because he was asked to be there to do the burnout. The promoter should of had saftey devices up for the crowd. Also the people at the burnout new the dangers and they were still there on the day. It is not fair that troy is being charged. I feel for him and his family. He is living with the guilt of what has happened and it will never leave him.

For the uninitiated, Troy was driver in a burnout demonstration in the 'States that went horribly wrong.
Local Police provided spectator control, local fire wet down the track. There were NO barriers between the road and the crowd. During the burnout, one of the rear tyres gripped before the other causing the car to spear into the crowd, killing 6. Troy was not being paid for this - he was doing this on a voluntary basis.
Troy has been charged with 6 counts of murder (yes, murder) and faces up to 90 years in jail - they has been placed solely to blame for the accident.

In my view, while he does have to bear some responsibility, by far the majority lies with the promoter and those overseeing spectator safety (ie the local police....)

In South Australia at least, there is legislation in place called the 'volunteer protection act' which protects volunteers working in good faith, and transfers the legal liability to the association for which they are working in a voluntary capacity. As a result, it is particularly important for associations/clubs to have proper liability cover.

Hey Roh,

Thanks for the link, I have added my name to the list. It is a horrible situation and I hope common sense prevails and he is found not guilty of these charges. The organisers I believe are the ones that should be accountable. Not a genuine aussie bloke offering his time and services for a charity event!
