Philip Island 500

Has anyone else read the article on v8 Supercar website?

http://www.v8supercar.com.au/content/hero_news/march08/new_phillip_island_format_set_for_action/

In short they are having 2x 15 lap races on the saturday, where each driver races one race. Also there will be one pit stop for tyres to be used over the two races. Teams are to decide which race to use the Pit Stop and which driver races which race.

"The combined points haul from races one and two will count for a third of the total points on offer for the weekend. But most importantly it will decide the composition of the grid for Sunday's '500' - which has moved from Sandown Raceway last year to the fast Phillip Island circuit for the first time in 2008"

I kinda like the idea - something different and will be interesting to see who pits when!

If the link doesnt work it should be on the main page of the v8supercar website.

I think it’s pretty interesting too Troy. Certainly mixes thing up :-) As long as there is no major damage in the Saturday races :-)

I don’t know how it will go. You saw how much can happen in 15 laps at the Grand Prix and it decides pole position for the big. I know it will be a mix up but we only get 2 endro for the year.

Great for us spectators but i cant see the teams being too happy about it. It will further drive up the cost of the series, dont know what goes through old Tone’s head sometimes?

hummm its a very unusal concept but the thing that worries by is it is billed as a race to get points right?? Well look at what happend at a non championship round at GP the infamous red mist. So obvisouly cause pole is the reward the boys will be going hard in fast in these races so what happens god forbide there is a massive crash there is only a night to repair cars so you could find some people with too badly damaged cars to start the race. So yeah it will be great to see more races and how it sorts pole but honestly it could be disastrous for some teams. and i agree with Blair about driving up the cost of the series more races = more chance to crash = more money

It is shit…………way to confusing for the fans who dont know as much. Both Sat races should have pits stops or none at all.

Way to much risk if you are in with a shot of winning the championship. Great to see V8SC changing the goal posts.

I agree its nice to mix things up………. but then someone takes it a little to far as usual.

Too right, I had to read the article about 3 times to make some understanding of it and I understand a fair bit about the V8 series.

It’s going to be a bit weird for the one car teams - or will they get to toss a coin to decide which race they join ?

Troy Foote

Bec,

Each co-driver will get to do one race. 2 drivers per car.

do the teams have to lock in which race they pitstop before race one or can they deciede durning the races? You are talking about confussing the people how dont follow the v8s. I am a huge fan and it confusses me.

If you think that is interesting, you should read how they decide the starting lineup for the Daytona 500.

here’s the simplest explanation I could find.

I dont know about you, but I kind of like the Daytona qualifying format, the only thing that really makes it weird is the top 35 rule. I like the idea of racing your way into a race, much more interesting than just doing one hot lap. If they would keep to the fastest 43 it would just be great. Speaking of qualifying, did you catch McDowell’s fun ride?

I agree with you completly. It’s the only thing I had to use as a comparison to the discussion topic. And, no, I missed McDowell’s fun ride. PM me and tell me more.

I agree with u matt they hav gone 2 far 2 mix the sport up a bit… They shud bring back the top 10 shootout 4 the enduro’s again coz i always get goose bumps c-ing the cars flying around the track 4 a 1 lap dash 2 dtermine the grid…4 a new idea 2 add 2 the sport, y dont they create a special stage round at night lyk in the wrc where 2 cars face off in a duel…. that wud b awesome!!!

I dont like the set up because an endurance race is endurancre race none of this where a certain amount of Saturdays points contribute to Sundays results, it has been the winner of the race is the winner of the round for the past 45 years why change now?? I think there are to many changes coming because i liked the Sandown 500

Lindy Hall

Lindy Hall 8:45 pm April 5th 2008

hmmmm - very interesting - although i am worried. what happens if codrivers have an oops and the car cant start the race on sunday?

are jamie and craig teaming up again? they make the best team!

Well said Matt !!! oh touche……

The Phillip Island 500… cant say i have been a fan of this idea since they announced it. I am unashamedly a stanuch traditionalist - and Motor racing in September to me is the Sandown 500. Even being an even stauncher Queenslander, thought the idea of moving the 500 to Queensland raceway as the wrong call. Time showed that is was the wrong call, and the race was promptly given back to the rightful owner.

Now AVESC… sorry V8SA… want to meddle with the 500 again. In my mind, this is like moving the Super Cheap Auto 1000 to Winton. It could work, but it isnt really right.

One thing that many other sports has over V8 Supercar is tradition. the AFL thrives and grows on it, and the NRL is desperately trying to get it back. Tradition equates to importance and adds to the stature of the event, and with importance comes coverage, corporate support and so on.

The Indycar people tried to ‘manufacture’ tradition with the ill-fated US500 at Michigan, in direct competition to the IRL Indy 500. It didnt work. The Sandown 500 was first run in 1964 I think… and has always been the traditional endurance race before Bathurst. Many great races have taken place at Sandown in the 500 - and all the great drivers have won there - Brock, Moffat, Johnson, Perkins, Richards, Lowndes and…..Jamie !

Not only is the event moved, but then throw in some half-baked idea about one driver races and combine the points of the finishing positions divided by the number of tyres on the car times the car number to the square root of the driving boot size of driver A. How are we supposed to keep track of it ? Thank god for Cromley and his calculator….

Memo to Tony Cochrane - KISS (No not Gene Symonds) Keep it simple stupid !!!

Oh, and can we have the 500 at Sandown again next year ?

Caro

Caro 11:43 pm April 5th 2008

Don’t encourage V8SA David. With suggestions like that the next time Tony is bored and decides to spice things up a bit he’ll move the 1000 to Winton and make your maths equation the points system for every second round.

I’m a traditionalist too and it’ll be strange not to have the 500 at Sandown this year. It hosted some of my favourite races. I think the PI500 this year will just be confusing.
