NZ Car Swap???

I was just reading on the V8 Website that a smaller team had offered Jamie the opportunity to use their car after his was destroyed in qualifying. Apparently, it's allowed under the rules, and I'm sure we all remember PB doing this a few times at Bathurst.

Personally, I think it was a great decision by Roland, but wondering what everyone else thought??

ah thats interesting, funny thing is i had actually thought to myself i wonder if some1 will do what happened to DJ @ the mount all those years ago.

would have been good if JW could have had a drive, but would have been awkward for T8 to setup the car unless it was a ex-T8 chassis, if it was PCR then well and good being T8-#11, does TKR have T8-#09??

i thought i was a good idea until i read Rolands reasons behind it, now im glad he didnt, i can see it now, Tander or Prick Kelly crash out and jump in either Andrew Jones BOC car or Tony D’alberto’s Bottle’o entry!!!

it would work in HRT & HSVDT favour more han anybody else i think, so well done to Roland, damn he is a smart fella, Matt get him signed up as member 888, i wanna talk to the champ!!!!

anyway, yes i could see the generals men “making the most” out of this if it were to arise!!!!!

I thought this was interesting. firstly i was surprised that is WAS allowed under the rules. Hopefully V8SA outlaw it now so everyone is clear and the rules arent maniupulated in the future, especially if it is in ‘the evil empires’ favour!

Secondly, how cool is Roland ? The more the man does, the more i admire him. He is a man of unbelieveable principle. Putting the best interests of the sport first, against the huge commercial pressure he would have from Vodafone, Ford, Komatsu, Nokia etc. This isnt the first time he has used descretion, and showed excellent sportsmanship in putting the sport before his own interests.

He didnt pursue the protest against Rick Kelly’s “punt to win” antics at PI in 2006, and he has also on numerous occasions asked his drivers to re-dress on-track incidents (even if the IPO thinks it is ok) to prevent any after race penalty.

It is a pity certain Scotsman where not as ’sporting’ as this Irishman !

It is a shame he beat his head against a brick wall at TEGA for so long before throwing his hands in the air.
The sport could certainly benefit from his wisdom and business acumen. If all owners and managers were ‘big picture men’ like RD, then V8’s would be a lot better off.

david, your right, Roland would have to be the smartest, most professional owner/manager in pitlane!!

the amount of times he puts the sport ahead of his own team is just crazy.

top bloke who i really admire!!!

Yeah it was TKR, I thought it was such a huge thing for them to do, you dont see much of that stuff anymore. I was gutted when I saw how damaged the 88 car was & I did think someone has to do something to help and Team Kiwi did but it was knocked back by (i think) Thomas Messera. Man I was disappointed, I couldn’t help thinking about some of the Bathurst’s that where handed to Peter Brock, when his car blew up or had a problem he could just kick out the co drivers of the other car and hey presto he’s back in the game.
This is not meant to show any disrespect to Peter at all but I do think he had some Bathurst’s handed to him.

The Bathurst car swapping is a different beast - in the day in was called “cross-entering” whereby at the point of entry the teams 4 drivers will all nominated to drive the team cars in any given combination as it was an endurance race. There was no rule preventing a driver from driving two different cars during the race, on the proviso that the driver in question was entered legally (listed as a driver of the said vehicle) and didnt breach the maximum driving time allowed. This is how Brock won twice, and indeed it was a good thing for the sport when this practice was outlawed following Bathurst in 1991.

In Jamie’s case in NZ, he was not entered as a ‘relief’ driver of the TKR car, nor had he practiced in it during the sessions on Friday. I cant see how he would have been allowed to commandeer the car for racing under the cams rules. Unless they re-numbered it 88, then the entry of car 88 would have been dodgy, as the car (chassis) listed as being car 88 actually wouldnt have been the real 88 (T8 012), it would have been 021 (T8 009). Confusing hey ?

Make it simple. Change the rules to cut out ’swapping’.

I believe that while this whole TKR/888 business went on, another deal for TKR to move out of their current workshop in Hamilton and up to PCR in Queensland.
I only caught the last bit of this information, but from what I heard it will be similar to when TKR ran with PMM - definite benefits to come from this, should lift both teams up the grid if this is the case!

PCR and TKR - rumours suggest there is a little more to this story than meets the eye Andrew… ;-)

Indeed the data interchange between the two teams will help, although PCR seem to be coming along well since getting their new car. Coulthard is in good touch and the car is chugging along well. On the flip side, having TKR could be a burden for the small team.. especially given their rumoured financial history.

Would you like to divulge in information of these rumours?

Doesn’t TKR have a technical partnership with Stone Bros?

Niks

On the TKR website it says ‘David John said it was back to the future for TKR – with the team assuming full control of their race preparation and development. They have purchased a chassis from Triple Eight Racing – the former car driven by Bathurst champion Jamie Whincup – and an engine package from SBR Engineering.’ It may be because the chassis came from Jamie originally that they offered it. Nice to Jamie but I felt a bit sorry for Kayne Scott.

not a great idea really, imagine Jamie wins a race in the old old car, kayne would have no excuse then!! nor TKR

Niks 5:02 pm April 26th 2008

Could have been a bit hard, but Kayne is a rookie in the Aussie V8’s. It’s interesting how they do going from the NZ series to the Aussie series. There must be heaps of differences between the two classes. I would love to see how Johnny Mac would do in a Aussie V8.

what are the specs on the NZ V8s? are they ex V8sc cars? or just HSV & FPV type vehicles?

Niks

Niks 5:12 pm April 26th 2008

Not ex V8SC cars, more like what is driven on the road. Which is kind of interesting as the Ford just blitz the Holdens. Great series to watch, some awesome racing. Did you get any of the coverage over there?
