A new starting system will be implemented in 2009 which does not require start grid marshalls which has allowed drivers to do burnouts to warm the rear tyres.
Other rule changes include:
-7 crew now allowed to work on the car in pits, previously 6 was the max.
-Cars will be allowed to overlap on SC restarts but no passing which has been changed because it is easier to police that the old method
-The control ECU will now be the Motec M800 which will also replace the TEGA data logger and a new accident data recording system will also be used from 2009
-Control fuel pumps, lines and filters will now be used for the E85 fuel
They are also looking at getting rid of overhead fuel rigs and changing to a fuel churn option for safety and cost reasons. I think this is similar to whats used in NASCAR.
Control parts were looked at however weren't approved. These included camshafts, wheels and seats.
And I know I already launched this discussion but the Shootout is back!!!YAY!!!!!!

I do not think they will be doing the fuel churns. I heard that they are bringing in CPS with Fuel and Tyers.

From an OHS&W perspective, going back to Fuel churns seems a step backward - not only ffrom a manual handling standpoint, but the existing system keeps the fuel out of pitlane, with a ‘deadman’ handle at the base of the tank.
From what I have heard, there will NOT be a CPS as such but with the introduction of E85 they are going to have to stop sometime for fuel anyway.
I can see why they are making the change to the SC restarts - the timing system becomes the judge if there has been overtaking or not. There downside is that it could become interesting where turn 1 is tight (turn 1,2 at Clipsal for example). The difference between an SC restart and a start is that the cars are already at speed when crossing the control line - so will be at a greater speed at turn 1…

I love the shootout so thats a great addition to next years qualifying.
I dont like idea of overlapping at start line, I think the person in the lead will be about 4th if everyone pulls alongside straight down the inside.
Sorry i couldnt help responding to this topic!!

I don’t know about going back to the Shootout. I think the F1 style qualifying works a lot better, and seems to give a better indication of a good race driver, rather than a person whose only capability is to put together one hot lap. The Shootout is a format that works well at Bathurst, but that’s about the only place it does work.
Yes, they are getting rid of the CPS, but as E85 has a much higher burn rate (30%? Can’t remember…) they will need to stop anyway. It’ll be interesting to see how the E85 affects the Great Race & PI next year…
I, like AI88, don’t like the idea of overlapping. And CAMS & V8SA should be competent enough to police the racing, so they shouldn’t need to take that step. No other Touring Car series does it, so why do we need to?
Silly season has formally begun.
